The overall goals of the Byrne Formula Grant Program are to reduce the use of illegal drugs and incidents of violent crime. During this reporting period, New Hampshire has continued to allocate Byrne Formula Grant Program funds toward programs that correspond to the priority areas as identified in the State fiscal year 2000 Multiyear Statewide Strategy. The program areas funded are designed to reduce the availability of illegal drugs, address the needs of at-risk youth, devise appropriate sentencing alternatives and treatment options, enhance the criminal justice information-sharing capabilities, and provide community and victim support in the prevention and control of violent crime. In an effort to reduce the availability of illegal drugs, the State funds a Multijurisdictional Drug Task Force to investigate and arrest the suppliers of illegal drugs. In an effort to address the needs of at-risk juveniles and the impact of juveniles on the criminal justice system, the State has funded Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) for three communities; Youth-At-Risk Crime Prevention Program area projects; School Resource Officer projects; out-of-school projects for at-risk youth; and a statewide mentoring initiative. The State has also provided funding for the State's criminal justice information sharing capabilities at all levels of the criminal justice system. Byrne Formula Grant funding has been used to link the courts to the State's criminal justice information system; and a major project has involved funding for an information technology consulting contract to assist with the design of the criminal justice information system plan. These efforts recognize that the inclusion of all components of the criminal justice system through a well-developed plan is vital to ensure that all pertinent data will be added to the records system in a timely manner.
