Abstract
In compliance with Section 21 of Chapter 799 of the Acts of 1985, this report from the Commissioner of Corrections for the State of Massachusetts presents the required statistics concerning the overcrowding in State and county facilities for the second quarter of 2002. Following a series of Massachusetts Department of Corrections (DOC) technical notes from 1996 to 2002, this report describes the six custody levels of correctional facilities throughout the State of Massachusetts and presents a table explaining a series of abbreviations used throughout this report. The remainder of this report is a series of tables indicating the Massachusetts DOC’s figures for the second quarter of 2002, figures for the previous 12 months, county figures for the second quarter of 2002, county figures for the previous 12 months, and quarterly statistics on new, criminally sentenced court commitments to the DOC for the second quarters of 2001 and 2002, by sex.
