This article profiles a drug prevention program aimed at preventing the use of ecstasy among high school students.
Abstract
The Kissimmee, Florida Police Department developed the Six Down drug prevention program in response to a number of deaths associated with the drug ecstasy. The program’s uses a mock production of students dancing at a rave club. Simulated drug purchases, and simulated use of the drug ecstasy are part of the production, as are police raids and arrests. The mock production includes emergency medical personnel attending to individuals who fall ill after using ecstasy and a death scene occurs as well. The Six Down program includes a videotape simulating drug dealers being arrested, booked, and appearing in a court of law for sentencing. While much is involved in the Six Down production, the community benefits are enormous, with schools, students, parents, rescue squads, hospitals, funeral homes, actors, and film crews all becoming involved in the program’s anti-drug message.
