Abstract
Racism is often dismissed as a significant problem in rural areas of Britain because the presence of minority communities is relatively small. Informal interviews with members of rural Suffolk County, however, indicate that racial harassment in this area is harmful and disturbing in nature. Detailing some of the forms of racism occurring in Suffolk county, including verbal abuse, name-calling, racist graffiti, stone-throwing, death threats, and physical violence, the article describes the Racial Harassment Initiative, designed to provide support and advice for those who report incidents of racial harassment. The article notes that racism in Suffolk county indicates the importance of multi-agency approaches to tackling crime and disorder throughout the United Kingdom. The informal interviews with residents of Suffolk county indicate that racism in rural areas of Britain are serious issues in terms of nature, extent, and impact, and combating rural racial harassment is a necessary step in the larger fight against crime for all regions within the United Kingdom.
