Uniform Crime statistics for Rhode Island are provided. Overall, crime was up 7 percent with 39,027 crime index offenses in 2001 compared to 36,445 in 2000. There were 39 murders, down 13.3 percent from last year. Firearms were used for most of the murders, followed by other dangerous weapons and knives. Rape was up 0.9 percent from last year, with 416 reported. Hands, fists, and feet were used for most of the rape offenses, followed by other dangerous weapons. Robbery was up 6.9 percent with 986 incidents. Hands, fists, and feet were used most often during robberies, along with firearms. Aggravated assault rose 5.8 percent with 1,844 incidents. These incidents involved mostly other dangerous weapons and hands, fist, and feet. Burglary was up 3 percent (6,824) with forcible entry the most commonly used method. Larceny-theft was up 8.3 percent. There were 23,875 incidents in 2001 compared to 22,038 in 2000. Motor vehicle theft was up 8.1 percent. There were 5,043 in 2001 compared to 4,665 in 2000. Automobiles were stolen more often than trucks, buses, or other vehicles.
