First, common myths about marijuana are presented and debunked in an effort to show that marijuana use is a serious concern, especially among the Nations' youth. Next, the negative consequences of marijuana use are outlined, including information about the addictive tendencies of the drug and its effects on the brain, lungs, mental health, and learning achievement. The report also notes that marijuana is more potent today than it has been in the past and marijuana use among the Nations' youth is becoming more widespread and acceptable. Also contained in the report are strategies that community coalitions may use to reduce and prevent marijuana use in local communities. Strategies include assessing the local problem, engaging parents, and addressing the false beliefs surrounding marijuana. Ideas for involving youth, schools, the media, the medical community, and community celebrities are included in this section. Finally, the report provides information about, and contacts for, some of the many National anti-marijuana campaigns that are underway. Local initiatives may gain expertise from National strategies, as well as resource materials to help in the fight against marijuana use.
