During 2001, there were 20,859 people admitted to China’s correctional system. Of these, 18,513 were sentenced to prisons, 1,737 to drug addiction centers, 222 to training centers, and 387 to detention centers. Section 1 of the report provides a description of the demographic, socioeconomic, and criminal characteristics of China’s sentenced persons. Section 2 further breaks down this information by type of correctional program, while section 3 offers statistical data for drug addicted sentenced persons. Section 4 provides a comparison between 2000 and 2001 data. Key points of the report show that in 2001, the number of sentenced persons admitted to the correctional system rose by 17 percent from 2000, to reach a record high. Females entering the correctional system increased by 60 percent during 2001, while male reception remained relatively stable. Twelve percent of those admitted to the correctional system in 2001 were offenders under the age of 21, compared with 10 percent in 2000. The average length of sentence for prisoners admitted during 2001 dropped slightly from 10.1 months in 2000 to 9.3 months in 2001. Those sentenced to drug addiction treatment rose by 23 percent from 2000 while those sentenced to training centers decreased by 14 percent compared to 2000.
