Abstract
The Ohio Supreme Court is the court of last resort on State constitutional questions and questions of public or great general interest, and it has original jurisdiction in select cases. The 12 courts of appeals conduct appellate review of judgments of common pleas, municipal, and county courts, as well as appeals from the Board of Tax Appeals. The 88 courts of common pleas consist of a general division, a domestic relations division, a probate division, and a juvenile division. There are 118 municipal courts, which have jurisdiction over misdemeanor offenses, traffic cases, and civil actions up to $15,000; and 47 county courts, which have jurisdiction over misdemeanor offenses, traffic cases, and civil actions up to $15,000. The Court of Claims handles all suits against the State for personal injury, property damage, contract, and wrongful death; compensation for crime victims; and three-judge panels upon request. Data from the courts for 2000 reflect the continuing increase in the number of cases filed in Ohio courts. A record 3,234,781 cases were filed in Ohio courts in 2000. This consisted of 2,355 in the Ohio Supreme Court, 10,394 in the courts of appeals, 167,885 in the courts of common pleas-general division, 78,230 in the domestic relations courts, 99,206 in the probate courts, 261,655 in the juvenile courts, 2,585,082 in the municipal courts, and 283,882 in the county courts. Data are provided on the various types of cases filed in these courts. Extensive tabular and graphic data
