In accordance with the Code of Virginia, the Department of State Police, as the central repository, collects crime information from participating agencies to provide the most accurate information on crime available in Virginia. For 2001, there were 477,875 Group A offenses reported by contributing agencies. This included 355 murders, 1,317 kidnappings, 5,039 forcible sex offenses, 6,609 robberies, 11,345 aggravated assaults, 87,052 simple assaults/intimidation, 1,788 arsons, 71 offenses of extortion/blackmail, 29,978 burglaries, 169,460 larcenies, 18,257 motor vehicle thefts, 12,374 fraud offenses, and 33,210 drug/narcotics offenses. Of the 21,720 violent crimes reported, 42.4 percent occurred in the home. There were 5,033 victims of the 4,724 forcible sex offenses reported by the contributing agencies; 86 percent were females. Firearms constituted 15.5 percent of all weapons used in aggravated assaults; 73 percent of all victims of aggravated assault had some type of injury. There were 113,365 Group A arrests reported by contributing agencies and 176,549 Group B arrests reported. There were 1,464 assaults on officers reported in the States; 35.2 percent involved some type of injury to the officer. Of the 409 hate crimes reported, 47.9 percent involved some type of assault offense, and 31.5 percent were vandalism/damage of property offenses. Extensive tabular and graphic data
