Chapters present data on recorded crime, recorded crime in which firearms were reported to have been used or misappropriated, homicide, offenders cautioned or found guilty, court proceedings, sentencing, the use of police bail and court remand, and criminal history studies based on the Offenders Index. There were 5.2 million notifiable offenses recorded by the police in 2000-01, a 2.5-percent decrease from 1999-00. Crime measured by the British Crime Survey (crime victim report) showed a decrease of 12 percent between 1999 and 2000. Property crimes accounted for 82 percent of the total crime in 2000-01, amounting to 4.3 million offenses; burglary declined by 8 percent, and thefts of and from vehicles showed a 7-percent decline compared with decreases of 5 percent and 3 percent respectively in 1999-00. Violent crimes increased by 4 percent. Although the proportion of all notifiable offenses in which firearms were reported to have been used remained at 0.3 percent in 2000-01, the number of firearms offenses increased; the number of firearms offenses other than air weapons increased by 8 percent in 2000-01, to 7,400. The detection rate was 24 percent in 2000-01, down from 25 percent in 1999-00. This report estimates that in 2000-01, 1.3 million arrests were made for notifiable offenses. In 2000, 1.7 million offenders were found guilty or cautioned, 1 percent fewer than in 1999. Extensive tabular and graphic data
