The first training exercise is designed for practicing crisis management techniques in the setting of a simulated anthrax exposure, using the Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) Crisis Management Plan in a drill/tabletop format. Under the simulated exposure scenario, a member of the college president's staff imitates opening an envelope and exposing himself/herself to a fake anthrax composition. The SFCC police personnel respond to the situation, assess the situation, and support college personnel and responding (simulated) public safety agencies. The Hazardous Materials Team simulates its response. In the second phase of the exercise, the college Crisis management Team coordinates response to media, family, and other governmental interests after the public safety agencies have secured the targeted building, obtained a sample of the unknown powder, and determined 24 hours later that the powder contained anthrax spores. The intent of a second tabletop training exercise is to practice crisis management techniques in the setting of a recreated murder/suicide similar to an incident that occurred on a community college campus in Florida. The expected outcome of the exercise is to review the tasks developed in the exercise and then determine whether the capability to accomplish these tasks is available or needs to be developed. 36 references on school violence
