This article explains how law enforcement agencies can have interoperability within their heterogeneous computer systems.
Abstract
Wireless middleware is described as a way of bridging disparate computer systems within an agency, so that all authorized users may access data from other departments and types of computer systems. The article first focuses on Padcom’s Connectivity Suite software, which includes four products: TotalConnect, TotalRoam, TotalSecure, and TotalControl. The way in which these software packages work to allow interoperability is discussed. Padcom offers three levels of encryption in order to protect both the application and the network. The article also discusses using Port Routing as a mobile firewall, which can prevent access to specific applications. Next, the article focuses on radio IP network empowerment and highlights the Mobile TCP/IP Gateway product from Radio IP. Also highlighted in the article are the products NetMotion Mobility, which allows officers to move between wide area network environments and Bestbandwidth Routing, which is another roaming product that automatically switches the user to the fastest available bandwidth connection. Another interoperability solution is Cisco’s 3200 Series mobile router, which contains multiple network interfaces to allow the router to communicate with any available responder.
