A total of 3 million motoring offenses were handled with a fixed penalty notice issued by police (including traffic wardens) in 2001, a 14-percent increase from 2000. There were 2 million court proceedings for motoring offenses during 2001, a 2-percent decrease from the previous year. Camera images of alleged traffic violations provided evidence in 1.1 million offenses processed in 2001, a 39-percent increase from 2000. Cameras provided evidence for 72 percent of the speeding offenses processed. A total of 623,000 breath tests were conducted during 2001, 13-percent fewer than in 2000. The number of positive or refused tests was 99,500 in 2001, a 5-percent increase from the 94,600 in 2000. In 2001 the largest group of motoring offenses handled by police were for obstruction, waiting, and parking offenses.
