Abstract
Published literature and datasets publicly available during the period 1992 to 2002 are included in this bibliography. The target audience is treatment providers, policymakers, and researchers who are interested in learning about drug treatment options available to adults within the criminal justice system. The document identifies key issues regarding adult drug treatment within the criminal justice population, with an analysis focusing on treatment needs, services available, and new information about which services yield the best outcomes for which type of client populations, and at what cost. The document also identifies issues such as the treatment gap, culturally competent treatment services, and recovery. There is an analysis of the literature itself, including the stage of the criminal justice system covered (arrest, prosecution, court, probation, incarceration, and supervised release) and whether the study involved research or an evaluation of a treatment program. Topics include the extent of drug use, assessment of the need for drug treatment, access to treatment, types of treatment available in the criminal justice setting, case management, costs of treatment, measures of effectiveness, and types of outcomes. Chapter 1 offers an introduction detailing the purpose of the bibliography and its organization. Chapter 2 discusses the methodology involved in selected literature and data sources to include. Chapter 3 presents a summary of the literature, while chapter 4 presents an overview of the data sources. An annotated bibliography of 334 documents related to drug abuse treatment in the criminal justice setting is included. A companion document entitled, Adult Drug Abuse Treatment by Criminal Justice Stage: A Literature Review, further summarizes the topics and issues identified in this bibliography.
