This article describes recent developments in software utilization in the corrections industry.
Abstract
The corrections industry tends to lag behind other industries in terms of utilizing technology developments. Although the use of computers to facilitate business is nothing new, corrections is only now beginning to utilize software packages designed specifically for their management needs. The author describes some of these software packages and how they are being used to more effectively and cost-efficiently manage corrections work. Cody Computer Services has designed a computer-aided dispatch system for corrections that keeps track of inmates and officers and allows for the easy scheduling of inmates and officers. Another software package from Atlas Business Solutions is also designed to facilitate the easy scheduling of employees within correctional settings. Other types of software packaging allow for the management of heat and air conditioning systems through the use of electronic, direct digital controls. The article also describes KeyTrak, a relatively new system designed to keep track of keys; who has them and when they have them. Overall, the use of software packages can greatly reduce the workload and increase the efficiency of the corrections industry. Contact information is offered for all the companies mentioned in the article.
