Although data for this report were drawn from a variety of sources, the primary source of data was the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System, which is maintained by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. In 2002, there were a total of 185,786 traffic crashes in Missouri that resulted in 1,082 fatalities, 72,599 injuries, and $3,398,182,500 worth of damage. Casual factors or characteristics are identified in separate sections relating to speed, drinking, young driver, older driver, commercial motor vehicle, motorcycle, school bus, bicycle, pedestrian, fixed object, hazardous material, construction or other work zone, and seat belt usage. Of the 185,786 Missouri traffic crashes, 17.6 percent were related to speed and 39.9 percent of the 1,082 fatal crashes were related to speed. Drinking was a factor in 4.7 percent of all the crashes and in 25.2 percent of the fatal crashes. Young drivers were involved in 31.0 percent of all crashes, while older drivers were responsible for 26.9 percent of all Missouri crashes. Commercial motor vehicles were involved in 3.9 percent of all crashes; motorcycles were involved in 0.9 percent of all crashes; bicycles were involved in 0.4 percent of all crashes; pedestrians were involved in 0.9 of all crashes; 17.2 percent of all crashes involved a fixed object; 0.1 percent of all crashes involved hazardous materials; and 2.6 percent of all crashes involved a construction or other work zone.
