This United Nations report provides an overview of the activities undertaken toward the goal of strengthening international cooperation and technical assistance in preventing and combating terrorism.
Abstract
In a resolution in 2002, the Economic and Social Council reaffirmed the importance of the counter-terrorism efforts of the Centre for International Crime Prevention. The mandates regarding international counter-terrorism cooperation were revised and strengthened to provide member states with the assistance required to effectively combat international terrorism. This report provides data concerning developments on the international front regarding counter-terrorism cooperation and technical assistance. The second section presents the views of member governments on the implementation of relevant instruments put forth by the Centre for International Crime Prevention. Of the 19 member states that responded to the request for information, 5 member states reported that they were party to all the instruments, while another 6 member states reported they were a party to half or more of them. The report offers detailed information regarding these instruments and member states’ participation. Next, activities undertaken to promote international cooperation and technical assistance against terrorism are reviewed and include the development and implementation of the Global Programme against Terrorism and the provision of advisory services. Cooperation with the Counter-Terrorism Committee and other United Nations entities and organizations is reviewed, as are efforts at raising public awareness concerning terrorism activities. Finally, the report describes the strengthening of the Terrorism Branch of the Secretariat and concluding remarks and recommendations for future activities are presented. Notes
