A summary is given of the mission and duties of this agency’s five divisions: Administrative, Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI), Driver License, Highway Patrol, and Service. The Administrative Division implements policies and procedures and provides a variety of functions necessary to the smooth operation of the Department. The division duties include executive security, financial services, legal, personnel management, planning and research, standards and integrity, and public information/education. The ABI is the investigative division of the Department of Public Safety and responsible for conducting criminal and drug investigations. ABI headquarters personnel made preparations for moving into the new downtown Montgomery facility during the fiscal year. ABI agents opened 1,264 cases, filed 1,105 assistance reports, and generated 502 intelligence reports. The investigations resulted in 48 arrests for 948 categories of criminal charges. Agents recovered 60 stolen vehicles valued at $671,500 and recovered $99,596 in other stolen property during the year. The Driver License Division is responsible for testing and keeping records on licensed drivers, including accident reports, traffic arrest forms, driver license applications, and traffic violation convictions. The Driver License Division made 636 felony arrests, an increase of 89 compared with last year, and 1,869 misdemeanor arrests, an increase of 1,198. The Highway Patrol Division comprises 6 troops made up of 14 Highway Patrol posts and communications centers. These posts are supported by tactical teams, the Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit, Training/Career Development Office, and the Motor Carrier Safety Unit. There were 184,190 arrests/citations issued during the year, mostly for speeding, seatbelt violations, and liability insurance. There were 302 traffic homicide investigations. The Service Division is responsible for providing training, supplies, equipment, assistance, and other special services necessary to the effective operation of the Department. The Criminal Justice Training Center provides training for department personnel, as well as training and/or accommodations for other law enforcement and governmental agencies. Appendix
