Towson University is the second largest university in Maryland with a student enrollment of more than 16,000 students. The university makes every effort to educate students regarding campus security and sensible security procedures. Recently, the university has expanded its emergency phone program, especially in the three parking facilities on campus. The article describes the installation of the emergency phones on each parking deck at each stair tower. By locating the phones near established exists, the university hopes to bring attention to the phones for those students who regularly commute to campus. Additionally, visitors have easy access to the phones because they are located along natural egress routes. The article describes the combination phone units which not only allow someone in need of help to quickly contact the university’s police department, they also allow nonemergency calls at building entrances for visitors who need to contact someone inside the building for access. Simply by pushing the nonemergency black button on the phone unit, the keypad on the phone is activated and ready for use. Craig Fringer, the telecommunications specialist for the university was interviewed for this article and expressed satisfaction with the operation of the emergency phone program.
