As part of the Correctional Service of Canada’s (CSC’s) National Drug Strategy, the Managing Addictions in the Community program came about as a collaborative effort between the Addiction Research Centre and the John Howard Society of Greater Moncton, Inc. The goal of the program was to develop a community-based substance abuse treatment program to assist adult male offenders with moderate to severe drug and alcohol problems. The program offers a unique, multi-disciplinary approach to substance abuse treatment that incorporates various community services in a comprehensive intervention framework. The demonstration pilot project incorporates three main components: the Choices program, the Substance Abuse Maintenance (SAM) program, and the Wraparound Process. The Choices program offers the core treatment component designed to provide a continuity of care from the correctional institution. The SAM program offers a long-term support mechanism to maintain an alcohol and drug-free lifestyle both before and after the Choices program. The Wraparound Process offers coordinated, multi-disciplinary community resources through an integrated, formalized process. The program is currently under evaluation, with a full evaluation planned for completion in March 2005. Endnotes
