OJP’s mission is to “provide federal leadership in developing the Nation’s capacity to prevent and control crime, administer justice, and assist crime victims.” OJP contains a number of Bureaus; among them are the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and the Office for Victims of Crime. OJP program offices include the Office on Violence Against Women and the Office for Domestic Preparedness. OJP’s recent reorganization is reviewed and the efforts of OJP following the September 11th attacks are described, particularly the efforts of the Office for Victims of Crime, the Office for Domestic Preparedness (ODP), and the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Program. Funding history information for fiscal year 2001 through 2002 is presented in table format. Major initiatives of the OJP during fiscal year 2001 through 2002 are described and were undertaken to further the goals of: (1) supporting communities to ensure public safety; (2) countering terrorism and ensuring domestic preparedness; (3) developing innovative crime control strategies; (4) protecting and supporting victims of crime; (5) combating domestic violence; (6) preventing delinquency and improving juvenile justice; (7) developing knowledge through research; and (8) collecting and analyzing statistics. For example, OJP has developed a number of initiatives to further the goal of countering terrorism and ensuring domestic preparedness. During fiscal year 2001, ODP trained 33,520 emergency responders while the National Institute of Justice helped establish first responder equipment standards and develop technologies and tools to deal with terrorist acts. OJP also worked toward the goal of protecting and supporting victims of crime by participating in initiatives to combat human trafficking and by providing funding to support the September 11th victims and their families.
