The purpose of Crime in Maryland is to compile data on index crimes in the State of Maryland for the National Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The UCR Program is a voluntary, nationwide effort to compile statistical information on index crimes from around the country. The Maryland crime report presents information concerning crime, clearance rates, arrests, law enforcement officers killed or assaulted, and law enforcement personnel data. Index crimes are identified as murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, breaking or entering, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. This report also offers information about arson. There were a total of 261,965 crime incidents reported in 2002, which is a 2 percent decrease compared to 2001. The violent crimes of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault decreased 1 percent, while property crimes consisting of breaking or entering, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft decreased 2 percent. The number of property crimes reported in 2002 was more than five times the number of violent crimes reported. Maryland law enforcement officers cleared 23 percent of all index offenses reported during 2002, a 1 percent increase compared to 2001. Violent crimes had a 51 percent clearance rate, while property crimes had an 8 percent clearance rate in 2002. The total value of stolen property in 2002 was $356,740,241, a 6 percent increase compared to 2001. There were 311,891 arrests in 2002, a 2 percent increase from year 2001 arrests. Drug violations accounted for 51,623 of the total arrests in Maryland. Arrests for driving while intoxicated accounted for 23,053 of the total arrests, a 1 percent increase from 2001. Six officers were killed in the line of duty during 2002, and 4,035 officers were assaulted (27 percent of all officers).
