This paper describes the content of a CD-ROM created to guide youth in exploring issues related to juvenile justice and the positive and negative choices that influence their interactions with the criminal justice system; suggestions for learning activities in association with the viewing of the CD are also provided.
Abstract
The CD, entitled "Passport to Opportunity," identifies some of the factors that place youth at high risk for criminal behavior, including poverty, exposure to violence, low self-esteem, lack of supports and resources, and peer pressure. Young men and women also discuss the community supports and resources that have contributed to their positive achievements. Some of the issues examined are why the justice system's structure and policies do not address the conditions that lead to crime but only punish those who commit crimes; who benefits from the criminal justice system; why the mainstream media give the impression that juvenile crime is increasing when it has actually been decreasing for the past 6 years; and why people are making a profit off the justice system. The CD presents and examines these issues through the mechanisms of music, personal testimony, quotes, essays, and questions for reflection. Throughout the CD, youth and adult experts examine the questions posed and encourages youth to become critical thinkers about their futures, including the development of positive strategies for avoiding behaviors that would involve them in the justice system, with its associated means of control and restrictive mechanisms. Each section of the CD provides interactive lessons and encourages thoughts about positive life choices. Upon completing each section of the instructional CD, the user can have his/her "passport" stamped, indicating completion of the segment. The CD is designed for youth ages 12-18.
