This report presents data on significant drug-seizure cases reported by governments to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for the period January 1-June 30, 2003.
Abstract
For each seizure, information is provided on the type of drug, place/city and date of seizure, the quantity seized, the origin and destination of the seizure, the means of transportation, and the number and nationality of the traffickers. The report notes that currently drug seizures are being reported by a limited number of countries (n=26), thus making it difficult to identify global trends from the data presented. Australia had 212 seizures of 11 types of drugs; Austria, 34 seizures for 7 types of drugs; Bahamas, 37 seizures of 3 types of drugs; Belarus, 2 seizures for 2 types of drugs; Canada, 257 seizures for 11 types of drugs; Czech Republic, 37 seizures of 12 types of drugs; Denmark, 12 seizures of 3 types of drugs; Egypt, 16 seizures for 2 types of drugs; Ghana, 14 seizures for 4 types of drugs; Greece, 63 seizures of 5 types of drugs; India, 107 seizures of 11 types of drugs; Ireland, 27 seizures of 5 types of drugs; Republic of Korea, 9 seizures of 4 types of drugs; Luxembourg, 1 seizure of 1 type of drug; Malawi, 52 seizures of 2 types of drugs; Mauritius, 7 seizures of 2 types of drugs; Nepal, 3 seizures of 1 type of drug; New Zealand, 96 seizures of 10 types of drugs; Pakistan, 196 seizures of 5 types of drugs; Portugal, 216 seizures of 6 types of drugs; Saudi Arabia, 2 seizures of 2 types of drugs; Spain, 685 seizures of 6 types of drugs; Tajikistan, 116 seizures of 5 types of drugs; Thailand, 38 seizures of 9 types of drugs; Turkey, 320 seizures of 10 types of drugs; and Zambia, 256 seizures of 5 types of drugs. Of the reporting countries, there were a total of 2,815 seizures. This report also provides a "Guidance Note for Reporting of Significant Drug Seizures," so as to facilitate and standardize the reporting of significant drug seizures. Extensive tables
