Operation Weed and Seed is a federally initiated and monitored strategy that assists and oversees local sites committed to the Weed-and-Seed goals of preventing, controlling, and reducing violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the country. The general strategy involves "weeding out" violent and drug-abusing criminals to prevent them from returning to the targeted neighborhoods and "seeding" those neighborhoods with resources and services that address the causes of violence, drug abuse, and criminal gangs. In describing the Federal resources that are available to Weed-and-Seed sites, this guide categorizes the resources under the topics of law enforcement/community policing; prevention, intervention, and treatment; and neighborhood revitalization.
