This review of a decade of the federally sponsored Weed and Seed Program (1991-2001) traces its history and presents articles on specific achievements of Weed and Seed programs.
Abstract
A brief introduction notes that the "In-Sites" magazine has chronicled and described Weed and Seed developments since 1993. This is followed by a brief report on a visit to the Las Vegas Weed and Seed program by the director of the Executive Office of Weed and Seed. An article describes a Weed and Seed action program in Naples and Melbourne, FL, called Operation Squeeze, in which neighborhood residents, under the protection of police, set up free lemonade stands at the places and times known to be frequented by drug dealers for their drug sales. The program has been an effective deterrent for drug dealing in those neighborhoods. Another article describes experiences of youth in the Weed and Seed DEFY (Drug Education for Youth) program, which involves holding summer camps for at-risk youth coupled with a mentoring program following camp participation. Two Weed and Seed honorees are profiled in another section of the magazine, and an instructional article provides guidance on how to be an effective Weed and Seed coordinator. Significant dates in the first decade of Weed and Seed are chronicled in another article, followed by a description of the Weed and Seed Accreditation training sessions. Other topics discussed in this issue are the link between truancy and crime as well as developments and trends in conflict resolution.
