This document is the spring 2004 newsletter of the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control (HEUNI), which is affiliated with the United Nations.
Abstract
Items covered in this newsletter include an overview of the 18th annual co-ordination meeting of the institutes comprising the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program Network (PNI), held on November 27–28, 2003, in Italy. The attendees reviewed their past activated and informed one another about their future plans. Other meeting reports covered in the newsletter include the International Scientific and Professional Advisory Council (ISPAC) plenary session, held November 27-28, 2003; an international conference on crime and technology organized by the ISPAC, held on November 28-30, 2003; a 2-day conference entitled “Tackling Organized Crime in Partnership,” held in Dublin, Ireland from November 20-21, 2003 and sponsored by the Irish Department of Justice, Equality, and Law Reform; and a meeting of the HEUNI Expert Group, held from January 13-14, 2004 to discuss and prepare proposals to be considered by the Commission on Crime and Prevention and Criminal Justice at its 13th session. Other items of interest in the newsletter include: a discussion of a HEUNI project that examined prisons in Central and Eastern Europe; a notice of a new HEUNI project, a guidebook on prison health; a look at professional crime in Finland in the 1990’s; and a list of current activities by members of HEUNI. A list of new publications, other publications, HEUNI staff news, the Grey Literature File, and scholarships for 2004 are presented at the end of the newsletter.
