Tables 1 and 2 present information on percent change in offenses reported to law enforcement for calendar years 2002 and 2003 by population group and geographic region. Compared to 2002, the number of violent crimes reported to law enforcement agencies across the country in 2003 dropped 3.2 percent. Violent crimes include murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Property crimes, which include burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft, have decreased 0.1 percent from 2002. Arson, which is categorized separately from property crimes, decreased 6.9 percent in 2003 when compared with 2002 data. Table 3 presents data on the percent change within the United States for consecutive calendar years from 1999 through 2003. Between 1999 and 2000, violent crime decreased 0.1 percent, while property crime decreased 0.3 percent. Between 2000 and 2001, however, violent crime increased 0.8 percent, while property crime increased 2.3 percent. Compared with 2001, 2002 data indicated a decrease of 0.9 percent in violent crime and an increase of 0.1 percent in property crime. Table 4 offers a 2-year comparison of offenses reported to law enforcement in cities and towns with a population of at least 100,000 for calendar years 2002 and 2003, listed in alphabetical order by city.
