This report presents statistical crime data for the State of Maine for fiscal year 2002 under the Uniform Crime Reporting Program.
Abstract
The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program is a nationwide cooperative effort of over 16,000 city, county, and State law enforcement agencies who voluntarily report statistical data on crime reported in their jurisdictions. In the State of Maine, 134 law enforcement agencies contribute to the statewide criminal justice system which submits the statistical data to the UCR Program. This annual report presents information on the nature and extent of crime in the State of Maine for 2002. For 2002, the crime clock indicated 1 index crime every 15 minutes, 16 seconds. In addition, violent crimes were reported 1 every 6 hours, 15 minutes and for property crimes 1 every 15 minutes, 55 seconds. Crime data information is reported on violent crimes, property crimes, murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, domestic violence, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, hate crime, stolen/recovered property, clearance rate, arrests, officer assaults, police employment data, and trends. Report highlights include: (1) the State crime rate for 2002 was 26.60 per 1,000 with a comparable rate of 26.96 in 2001; (2) violent crime accounted for 4.1 percent of all reported index crimes; (3) property crimes accounted for 95.9 percent of all index crimes; (4) there were 14 murders committed in 2002, down by 26.3 percent from 2001; (5) police reported 4,813 domestic violence offenses, a decrease of 2.2 percent from 2001; (6) police reported 36 incidents of hate crime involving 43 victims and a total of 46 offenses; and (7) there were 262 assaults on law enforcement officers in 2002, a 6.8 percent decrease from 2001.
