This booklet presents the Office for Victims of Crime's (OVC's) Training Calendar for Victim Service Providers from October to December 2004.
Abstract
The five workshops announced in this calendar address the skill-building needs and respond to requests and suggestions from the field for up-to-date, pertinent, and action-oriented training. One of the workshops, the 2 1/2-day Professional Development Institute (October 13-15), is for program managers and supervisors who want to enhance their skills and abilities in managing their services, resources, and staff. The Institute presents theoretical concepts and practical guidelines for leadership, strategic planning, human resource development, and program evaluation. The second workshop, leadership in Victim Services (October 27-29), is for experienced victim service providers in leadership positions. Using case studies and examples from inside and outside the field of victim services, this workshop addresses the qualities, attitudes, styles, and strategies of leaders in victim services. The third workshop, Sexual Assault Advocate/Counselor Training (November 16-17), is intended primarily for sexual assault advocates, counselors, volunteers, or staff at rape crisis centers. It focuses on crisis intervention rather than long-term counseling. The training is designed to increase participants' understanding of sexual assault and the major roles of an advocate/counselor. The fourth workshop, The Ultimate Trainer: An OVC Curriculum for Training Design and Delivery (November 16-18), is designed for victim service providers and allied professionals who develop and deliver training but do not have a formal background or extensive experience in adult education or instructional design. The interactive training will help participants build the knowledge and practical skills needed to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate quality training programs. The fifth workshop, Curriculum Design Training for State Victim Assistance Academies (December 14-17), is for victim service providers from States with established State Victim Assistance Academies or from jurisdictions that anticipate launching such an academy. This interactive workshop will build the skills for creating skill-based training for victim service providers. An actual training module will be developed. For each of the aforementioned workshops, information is provided on cost, dates, location, who should attend, and the learning objectives. Information is also provided on a scholarship program. Registration forms for the workshops and scholarship are provided.
