This report provides trend data on substance abuse and blood borne diseases related to drug use in the State of Texas for June 2004.
Abstract
Published every 6 months, this report presents trend information on substance abuse of more than 15 illicit drugs (i.e. cocaine and crack, alcohol, heroin, other opiates, marijuana, stimulants, depressants, ecstasy, ketamine, LSD, rohypnol, inhalants, and steroids) in Texas for June 2004. The information on each drug is discussed in the following order of sources: (1) student substance use; (2) adult substance use; (3) use by Texans ages 12 and older; (4) Poison Control Center data; (5) treatment data; (6) overdose death data; (7) drug use by arrestees; (8) drug and alcohol arrests; (9) drugs identified by laboratory; (10) price, purity, trafficking, distribution, and supply; (11) reports by users and street outreach workers; (12) AIDS data; and (13) hepatitis C data. Selected trend findings include: (1) cocaine is the primary illicit drug for which Texans enter treatment; (2) the use of crack cocaine is at an epidemic level with an increase in White and Hispanic users; (3) alcohol is the primary drug of abuse; (4) codeine cough syrup continues to be abused; (5) club drug users differ in socio-demographic characteristics; (6) ecstasy use is moving out of the White club scene; (7) PCP indicators are continuing to rise; (8) the number of AIDS case are growing for females and persons of color; and (9) 41 percent of persons testing positive for hepatitis C (HCV) were exposed through injecting drug use.
