Over 400 individuals from law enforcement agencies, universities, Federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and software vendors across the United States and abroad attended the Seventh Annual International Crime Mapping Research Conference to learn more about techniques and ideas pertaining to crime mapping and analysis. There were approximately 130 presenters, 49 panels, 22 workshops, and 18 vendors at the 4-day conference; the keynote address was delivered by Edward Flynn, the Secretary of Public Safety for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Workshop topics included an introduction to CrimeStat III, spatial regression techniques, and the basics of cartography. Panels and presentations covered topics such as Corrections, Probation, and Parole; GIS for Public Safety; Spatial Analysis and Research; Local, Regional, and Federal mapping; and Geographic Profiling and Forecasting. Roundtables discussions were held about development issues in spatial crime analysis software and international concerns, successes, and challenges in terms of ongoing crime mapping efforts. A keynote luncheon address delivered by Tom Casady of the Lincoln, NE Police Department focused on the future of Compstat and how it has impacted police departments across the country.
