Negotiation defined by Dr. Bernard A. Ramundo is the process of orchestrating the exploitation and manipulation of situational opportunities with the persuasiveness of presentational skills and personal characteristics to attain desired objectives in a dialogue. In addition to understanding what negotiation is, there is the need to learn how to develop a sense of how to think about, and how to bring about, the use of this power of negotiation in interactions with others. There is the need to learn and practice negotiation techniques and skill development. It is thought that the best way to learn is through repeated practice of these invaluable skills. This article presents a practical exercise which was developed to allow for the practice of those techniques and the refinement of negotiation skills. The practical exercise presented is the buying of a new car for a 15-year old girl by her parents. The steps to the exercise include: (1) a pre-negotiation mental warm-up; (2) general information for all participants; (3) role instructions exclusively for the father; (4) role instructions exclusively for the mother; (5) role instructions exclusively for the 15-year daughter; (6) role instructions for salesperson; (7) role instructions exclusively for sales manager; and (8) post-negotiation review. 1 Reference
