One resource kit, which is entitled, "Respecting Human Rights and the Dignity of Prisoners," is designed to instruct prison staff in the principles of human rights and human dignity that are applicable to prisoners in the prison setting. A second resource kit, entitled "Gaps in Compliance With International Standards," teaches prison officers about the importance of applying international standards in managing prisons. The training identifies the gaps between current prison practices and those set by international standards. The featured international standards are those of the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners. The third training topic is the "Rights of Women and Mothers as Vulnerable Prisoners." The purpose of this training is to ensure that prison staff and others involved in the penal system respond appropriately to the special needs that women and mothers with children face while incarcerated. Each of the training kits provides information on its purpose, objectives, the target audience, time required for the training, a list of reference and resource materials and training materials, preparation and follow-up, the workshop agenda, a description of learning events, and closing procedures. The resources section presents papers on the following topics: international standards on good prison management, introduction to vulnerable prisoners, juvenile inmates, inmate women and mothers, inmates who are mentally ill and developmentally disabled, foreign inmates, minority inmates, and death row inmates.
