Since 1991, the number of inmates with mental illnesses in New York's State Prisons has grown by 71 percent. Most of the prisons are under-staffed and under-resourced to deal the these extreme increases. The result is that inmates are not treated for their illnesses and therefore are not rehabilitated. This study examined 13 of its major findings and then proceeds to give 13 recommendations for implementing the findings. The study examined living in prison with mental illness from a prisoner's viewpoint. Researchers also explored prisons through staffing and training deficiencies, residential care, crisis care, disciplinary lockdown, treatment for disturbed inmates and discharge planning. Models from other jurisdictions were taken into account and reviewed to help improve New York's State prisons. References
