This article presents the results of a survey on the State of Ohio’s domestic violence centers’ programs and services for older abused women.
Abstract
In an attempt to document the programs and services for older abused women in the State of Ohio, directors of domestic violence (DV) centers in Ohio were surveyed regarding the nature of services and programs offered to women victims over the age of 55, as well as the shelter policies regarding the needs of these women. The survey questionnaire sent to 71 DV centers operating in 2001 contained questions about the characteristics of the staff, shelter policies, the duration of stay for women, programming and outreach for older women, relationship with various agencies on aging, DV training to various agencies on aging, and training of DV center personnel regarding older women and domestic violence. The response rate for the questionnaire was about 73 percent (n = 52). Results from the questionnaire indicate a demand for sheltering older abused women. In addition, the need for more collaboration among agencies, especially those that share overlapping interests in the safety and well-being of older abused women was recommended. References
