Multnomah County developed this manual for the purpose of providing basic information on how to address domestic violence in the lives of departmental staff, clients, and the general public. The manual provides a definition of domestic violence, as well as the impact of domestic violence on children’s lives. A brief description is provided of available resources with specific contact information which includes safety planning, crisis lines, safe-emergency housing, shelters, support groups, civil remedies, criminal remedies, counseling, and batterers’ intervention programs. Community resources are listed is the areas of service for victim/survivors of domestic violence, specialized law enforcement units, batterers’ re-education programs, services for children who have witnessed domestic violence, and resources for battered lesbians, bisexuals, or gay men. Additional resource information covers multicultural resources, restraining orders, elderly and disabled person restraining orders, mandatory arrest/prosecution, stalking orders, resources for legal action, barriers and services for battered immigrant women, assisting in the prevention of domestic violence, and ways to help someone who is being hurt.
