Abstract
Motorcycle officers depend on oral communication with dispatch; this process is made easier with wireless helmet communications. The “Motor-One” Wireless Motor Kit from PVP Communications uses BlueTooth technology to wirelessly connect a motorcycle officer to dispatch. Officers without wireless communications must plug and unplug their helmet every time they get onto and off of their motorcycle, losing valuable seconds each time. With the wireless system, the process of putting on the helmet and activating the system is a three-step process that is only done once, not every time the officer stops the motorcycle. Other products making officer duties more efficient are electronic ticket writers, handheld DUI arrest software, handheld collision report software, and traffic management software. Compaq’s iPAQ Pocket PC will soon be used by California’s South Bay DUI Task Force, equipped with collision and DUI arrest reports and electronic citations. The future of police technology is also discussed and includes the desire for a hands-free system that allows officers to instantly search license plate numbers for warrant information.
