Abstract
Mobile technologies are expected to boom in 2005, according to the author, who gives his predictions on the technologies that will become available in 2005. More mobile broadband networks and capabilities will be available, which will change the way officers operate in the field. Intelligent incident management systems will also emerge, providing voice, video, data, and location-aware communications at incident sites. Larger jurisdictions are currently testing some of these incident management systems; if they are successful, this type of technology will quickly spread across the country. The author predicts that public safety communications will not be served by one single type of technology but rather a broad array of networks that are as diverse as the functions of law enforcement. Other predictions of 2005 technology include the addition of mobile meshing networking capabilities and the arrival of 4.9-GHz networking products. Finally, mobile WiMax, which is appealing for public safety communications, is not expected to be ready until 2006. Overall, in 2005, mobile technology will flood the law enforcement and public safety sector.
