The 2003 Maine Crime and Justice Data Report is a compilation of various State and Federal criminal justice reports produced by the Maine Statistical Analysis Center (SAC). The report provides information on trends and existing conditions in Maine that apply to the criminal justice system. Information is reported on crime, arrests, and clearance rates, court processing data, and corrections data. A number of key findings regarding crime, arrests, and incarceration in Maine are presented. Report highlights include: (1) the number of crimes reported in the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) in Maine was virtually unchanged between 2001 and 2002; (2) the crime rate in Maine is 35 percent lower than the rest of the Nation; (3) over the last decade, arrests for all Index crimes declined significantly in Maine; (4) Maine’s arrest rate for violent crimes is nearly four times lower than the Nation; (5) the number of criminal and civil filings in District Court declined 4.1 percent in 2003; (6) the number of criminal filings in Superior Court increased 32 percent due to new court regulations; (7) Maine had the fastest growing prison population increase in the Nation; and (8) the number of inmates in the State prison system is above capacity.
