This report presents statistics on criminal cases finalized by the New South Wales (Australia) local, licensing, children's, district, and supreme courts in 2003.
Abstract
For local courts, data were provided on the number of cases finalized and the charges, the most frequently charged offense, court outcome, bail status, legal representation, penalties, characteristics of persons found guilty, court delays, and apprehended violence orders. Statistics for children's court address the number of persons charged and offenses proven, the most common principal offense, gender and bail status of persons appearing in court, penalties, the age and gender of defendants, and prior proven offenses. Data for higher courts pertain to total cases registered, cases committed for trial, cases committed for sentence, and cases committed for trial as a percentage of all registrations. Other data for the higher courts cover the numbers of cases finalized, trials held, cases committed for trial but which proceeded to sentence only, the percentage of finalized cases that proceeded to trial, and the most frequently charged offenses. Higher court data are also presented on outcomes, penalties, characteristics of persons found guilty, court delays, prior convictions of persons found guilty, and appeals. Extensive tabular data and appended notes on penalties, penalty hierarchy for principal offense, district courts in registry regions, and local government areas in statistical divisions
