This article describes the National Law Enforcement Leadership Initiative, a project of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW).
Abstract
The National Violence Against Women Advisory Group, composed of law enforcement representatives, judges, prosecutors, and advocates, met in February and August 2004 to progress toward their goals of creating a change in the response to violence against women and to preventing crimes against women such as sexual assault and human trafficking. During the two meetings, the Group progressed on work for the new National Law Enforcement Leadership Initiative in cooperation with the IACP. The initiative, which has been funded over 3 years by the OVW, focuses on law enforcement efforts to prevent crimes against women. It has three main components: (1) a national law enforcement leadership institute series; (2) a national law enforcement trainer certification program; and (3) a national policy summit on human trafficking. The leadership institute series will begin in 2005 and will offer training to law enforcement executives who have demonstrated experience and interest in issues surrounding violence against women. The trainer certification program will train the trainers who are currently instructing law enforcement officers on how to handle crimes against women. The summit on human trafficking is scheduled for early 2006 and will bring together experts in the field to offer recommendations to the criminal justice field.
