The guide is meant to serve as a resource for local officials, victim advocates, law enforcement officers, trainers, and community activists looking for project ideas that have been successful at reducing domestic violence in other communities. The programs highlighted here were chosen because they demonstrated excellence in applying at least one of the featured strategies, which include: targeted training of responders, outreach to individuals at risk, support for survivors of abuse, public awareness, policing and the courts, and offender monitoring and intervention. Many of the programs focus on underserved populations and also address the needs of abused children who witness domestic violence and battered male partners. The programs are located in both urban and rural settings. While some of the programs are designed to address primary prevention, other programs focus on help-seeking behavior as a form of secondary prevention. Programs focusing primarily on tertiary prevention are also included; these programs seek to curb revictimization and future violence. The guide reports on the programs in a consistent format, discussing the strategy used by the program, the community problem it addresses, the key components of the program, the key partnerships involved, potential obstacles to program success, benchmarks of success, tips for applying the strategy from program administrators, and contact information. Where possible, case examples have been provided to illustrate the strategy as it is practiced. Appendixes
