The Massachusetts Treatment Center (MTC) developed two typologies for the classification of sexual offenders, one for rapists and one for child molesters. The child molester typology was based on 177 child molesters treated at MTC between 1959 and 1981. In the typology, four types of child molesters were identified, paralleling other typologies previously developed, and included: fixated, regressed, exploitative, and aggressive or sadistic. However, the use of this typology has not yet been fully replicated outside the MTC. In this study, 109 child molesters who were assessed or treated at the Regional Treatment Center in Ontario, Canada were classified according to the MTV child molester typology. The results indicated that it was possible to apply the MTC Child Molester typology in a population outside the MTC. The implications of this study are discussed in the areas of treatment and risk assessment. References
