The first section of the manual--which pertains to identification, reporting, and referrals--outlines ways in which reports of domestic violence might come to the attention of the police. This is followed by a section on deployment which provides guidance for staff who work in police communication rooms. Topics addressed are safety issues, confirmation of information, preservation of evidence, and resource deployment. Section 3, entitled "Fast Track Action," provides information for officers responsible for first response. Guidance is provided for issues such as officer safety, powers of entry, actions upon arriving at the scene, medical treatment for the victim, child protection, initial inquiries, using interpreters, power of arrest, and arrest strategies. Section 4 focuses on possible sources of evidence, including physical evidence, victim and witness evidence, house-to-house inquiries, and medical records. Section 5 provides guidance on police action after an arrest has been made. It discusses a custody plan, interviewing, charging, and preventing a repeat of the violence. Section 6 pertains to specialist investigations and advocacy. This section provides guidance for officers who have received specialized training in domestic violence investigations. The three remaining sections address the management of police officers, agency staff, and information systems; multiagency working; and the roles and responsibilities of other agencies. 35 references and 25 checklists
