This study presents results of an evaluation on the psychoeducational program, Helping Adolescents Cope.
Abstract
Research indicates that over 20 percent of adolescents experience difficulties in coping. School-based psychoeducational programs have been found to be successful in helping students at risk. However, these programs are not seen as a cure-all. To ensure that schools are actually helping students through the use of psychoeducational type programs, evaluations of such are essential. This study evaluated the effectiveness of one particular psychoeducational program, Helping Adolescents Cope which was offered to 112 young adolescents identified (by themselves) as experiencing difficulties and being in need of specific help in coping. The participants’ progress was monitored and evaluated using qualitative and quantitative measures. Study results indicate the effectiveness of the Helping Adolescents Cope Program in reducing the extent of problems and depression reported by the participants as measured by the Children’s Depression Inventory and the Porteous Problem Checklist. The participants’ reliance on non-productive measures of coping also decreased as measured by the Non-Productive Coping score of the Adolescent Coping Scale.
