Family Connections was designed to work with families in promoting protective factors, reducing risk factors, and preventing the neglect of their children. This article reports on the development and outcomes of this federally funded 5-year demonstration project. The process used to design a preventive intervention, such as Family Connections (FC) is described, as well as the results of an initial evaluation of two versions of the FC intervention. The study sample consisted of 154 families in a poor, urban neighborhood with 473 children who met risk criteria for child neglect and were randomly assigned to receive either 3- or 9-month intervention. Participants reported positive changes in their family and circumstances with most gains sustained 6 months after the intervention had ended. Results demonstrate promise for the program with the program lending support to other studies of home-based interventions with high-risk families. Tables and references
