Abstract
Domestic violence investigations pose unique threats not only to the victim, but also to those intervening. The current article discusses the myriad issues facing professionals who confront domestic violence situations. Aspects of the victim and factors affecting the victim’s behavior are discussed, followed by a consideration of the traditional conception of the family unit. The author explores how a family’s value system influences the perception of violence, and even the perception of truth, and then analyzes traditional family relationships and same sex family relationships. Other issues considered in the article include the effects of age and race on domestic violence, as well as the impact of secondary victimization on victims of domestic violence. Relevant research is reviewed and a brief description is offered of the effects of labeling on violent behavior. References
