Abstract
A letter from the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia touts the value of Weed and Seed for his district, followed by recognition of an officer who died in the line of duty while implementing a Weed and Seed drug initiative in St. Louis. The proceedings of the 2004 Continuation Application Kit Workshop held in Dallas, TX, on February 24-27, 2004, is described. This involved announcements, speeches, training, and reports on programs pertinent to Weed and Seed operations. Another article reports on the launching of the media campaign for Project Ceasefire in Wichita, KS, which is designed to warn convicted felons not to possess firearms. The magazine then announces the U.S. Office of Weed and Seed's sponsorship of training in community-oriented policing for the Community Policing Unit of the Norwalk Police Department (Connecticut), followed by a report on the shutdown of a criminal drug enterprise whose criminal activities were affecting several Utah Weed and Seed sites. In the magazine's section on "What's Working," the Navy's program of Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) is noted for its recognition as the best community drug awareness program in the U.S. Navy for fiscal year 2002. DEFY provides youth ages 9-12 with the tools they need to resist drugs and gang involvement. Among the other Weed and Seed programs described are services to residents of assisted living facilities in Anchorage, AK; efforts to address violence against missing and runaway youth in Lowell, MA; an innovative Air Cadet Program in New Mexico; and a summer transportation program for youth in Lumberton, NC.
