This article describes several high-tech automated surveillance technologies, systems, and programs developed in the fight against terrorism.
Abstract
Playing a crucial role in the war against terrorism and in the protection of the United States against an attack is that of high-tech automated surveillance. Today’s automated surveillance technologies involve more than remote cameras, they involve intelligent cameras which function without operators, and there are automated sensory devices which are able to detect tiny traces of biochemicals, explosives, or radiation. Automated surveillance systems can monitor people, as well as monitor the environment, food and water supply, borders, ports, and much more. This article briefly describes five areas of high-tech automated surveillance technologies, systems, and initiatives. These include: (1) Department of Homeland Security, Bio-Surveillance Program Initiative; (2) intelligent automated visual/video surveillance; (3) automated surveillance with border protection of defense applications; (4) automated surveillance with increased and improved effectiveness combining real-time image processing and machine perception effectiveness; and (5) maritime surveillance systems.
